Greg Nye ’02

During his playing career at Wooster High School and The College of Wooster, Greg Nye became one of the best golfers to ever tee it up in Wayne County.

At Wooster High, Nye lettered four times from 1971-74. In both 1973 and 1974, he was the District Individual champion, and in 1974 he was the medalist in the Cardinal Conference.

From there, Nye went on to play for his father and fellow Wayne County Sports Hall of Famer Bob Nye at The College of Wooster, where he compiled a tremendous individual and team record. Nye was a four-time All-American with the Scots, three times on the first-team, never finishing lower than eighth individually in the national tournament. Nye was the OAC individual champion in 1977 and 1978. Nye and his teammates reached the pinnacle in 1975, winning the NCAA Division III national championship.

Nye won the Manges Award as the college’s Outstanding Senior Athlete, and was elected into the COW Hall of Fame in 1990.

After several years as a teaching professional and assistant pro, Nye was named head men’s and women’s golf coach at Bowling Green, where he spent eight years. In 1987, he was named Mid American Conference Coach of the Year.

In 1992, Nye was named head coach of the Penn State men’s team, where he is today. In 1995-96, his team became the first ever from the East Regional to make it to the NCAA finals. A four-time District II Coach of the Year, Nye has led the Nittany Lions to 39 team titles and nine straight regional appearances entering this season.
